SAVAGES! I can’t think
of any other printable
word to describe the
West Virginians who
kidnapped, raped, beat,
threatened and subjected
Megan Williams to such
inhumane treatment as has
been reported in recent
weeks.
The West Virginia 6 did
everything but kill her and
for the life of me I don’t
know why they weren’t
charged with attempted
murder.
The outrage over the
treatment of Megan
Williams has not reached the
level of protest, anger and
media coverage that the dogs
who were victimized by
NFLer Michael Vick and his
merry band of cohorts.
Media outlets have not
had the extensive coverage
and editorial cartoonists and
writers are not latching on to
a crusade to express disdain
for the savage acts of Danny
Combs, Frankie Lee
Brewster and her son Bobby
Ray Brewster, Karen Burton
and her daughter Alisha
Burton and George Messer.
According to police
reports, 20-year-old Megan
Williams knew Bobby
Brewster and they had a rela-
tionship that had resulted in a
domestic abuse case—but
nothing like the abuse she
was subjected to at the hands
of those West Virginia Six.
There are several lessons
for young sisters to learn
from Ms. Williams’ unfortu-
nate situation. You must be
careful about the people you
associate with and when you
find yourself in a bad
situation, you must remove
yourself immediately.
You can’t go back.
While some may have
found themselves in bad situ-
ations and things eventually
got better; there are too many
graves you can visit where
that was not the case.
It has been reported that
Ms. Williams went to the
mobile home where
Brewster’s mother, Frankie
Lee, lived. They held her
from August 2 until Logan
County Sheriff’s deputies, on
a tip, went out to the trailer
and discovered her as she
came out of the trailer
begging for help on
September 8.
In addition to a broken
arm and wrist, Ms. Williams
was repeatedly raped,
stabbed, and beaten. Her hair
was yanked from her head
and she was choked with
some type of cable or
extension cord.
Are you outraged yet?
It gets worse. She was
forced to eat rat and dog
feces, drink water from a
toilet and lick blood from the
floor.
Just the thought angers
and disgusts me.
Sure the NAACP, SCLC
and the local Black
Ministerial Alliance have
been vocal, but where are all
of these other folks who
would tried to devalue the
protests on behalf of the Jena
6?
What would make folks
more apt to speak out about
the mistreatment of animals
but remain noticeably silent
when a human being is bru-
talized?
Interestingly it has been
confirmed that Ms. Williams
is mentally challenged.
There are some who would
say so are the West Virginia
6!
It is also interesting that in
some reports, Ms. Williams
is referred to as the “alleged
victim.” There’s no doubt
that she was victimized and
subjected to acts you
wouldn’t wish on your worse
enemy, unless you are as sick
and demonic as the West
Virginia 6.
At press time the WV6
have been charged with kid-
napping and first-degree
sexual offense.
Hell, they had more
charges filed against OJ
Simpson!
Some will say “don’t play
the race card.” Well, I need a
rational person to tell me
why we are not being
deluged with reports on this
assault. Someone surely has
an answer.
Would the media
coverage, charges and public
outrage be more extensive if:
Megan Williams were white,
if she weren’t poor or
mentally challenged? Is it
because she had some
brushes with the law?
Can you believe that
Megan Williams was in
court since her attack?
That’s right. She was
arraigned after being charged
with 11 misdemeanor counts
of writing worthless checks,
one misdemeanor count of
obtaining property under
false pretenses and one
felony count of failure to
appear in Circuit Court.
Cool, reasonable perspec-
tives are necessary to explain
the madness that occurred
for over a month and the
actions of everyone over the
past almost four weeks.
Now what if Megan were
your daughter, sister, niece or
grandchild? It shouldn’t
matter. Usually the names of
rape victims are not released
but Ms. Williams’ foster
mother, Carmen Williams,
said she wanted the world to
know what happened to her
daughter.
Her decision reminds me
of another courageous
mother, Mamie Till Mobley
Bradley, who put a face to
the ugliness of lynchings and
racism when she ordered the
coffin open so the world
could see what savages in
Mississippi did to her son,
Emmett, in 1955.
Over a half century later
and we’re still dealing with
these types of atrocities.
Megan Williams did not
deserve to be assaulted.
No one does.
The WV6 deserve to pay
for their acts and anyone
breathing and old enough to
do something should be
speaking out and saying “no
more.”
And, we need to be
reaching out to offer support
to this young lady.
Don’t you agree?
