The long awaited day is finally here and visitors to the new-and-improved South Dallas Cultural Center are in for a definite treat.

Thursday, November 1 dignitaries, business and community supporters and the beneficiaries of the facility will gather to reopen the doors to the thousands of individuals who have come to know the facility as a haven for African culture and expression.

“It’s been two long years,” said Vicki Meek, the Center’s manager. “ We’ve worked out of other spaces and we have gained new audiences. Now I hope they will join us at our home.”

Featuring state-of-theart equipment, an impressive roster of some of the giants in the arts, and a beautiful facility that includes a new library, a top of the line dance studio with full-service dressing rooms, the Virtual Sound Lab recording & video studio, digital photography studio, the 120-seat Black Box Theater, a spectacular art gallery with contemporary lighting and amazing hardwood floors, new offices, a break room, outdoor patio, a beautiful lobby/reception area and an extended parking lot.

Art from local artists will grace the walls.

“We have been supporting local artists for over 20 years,” she explained, as she pointed at photos from Carl Sidle, during a recent tour of the facility. “We do everything that is culturally based and African-centered.”

Other artists will be featured as the center released a calendar of activities celebrating the” grand reopening.” Calling the South Dallas Cultural Center, “the premiere center for Jazz” in the area, Ms. Meek says that local artists know they have a venue where their works are appreciated and she is looking forward to showcasing all the local artists.

“We’ve got so much more space now,” she pointed out proudly, as she made her way around each room, explaining what each would hold, upon completion. “People can come here and hold meetings. It will be so good to have people come to the Center.” Dallas City Councilwoman Carolyn Davis, whose district includes the center, agrees.

“This looks great,” she said, after touring the facility. “This Center is definitely something to be proud of.”

Long-celebrated for the caliber of artists and performers who visit the center and provide programming for a community hungry for a center focusing on their culture and heritage, the SDCC under Ms. Meek’s leadership has
