The long awaited day is
finally here and visitors to
the new-and-improved
South Dallas Cultural
Center are in for a definite
treat.
Thursday, November 1
dignitaries, business and
community supporters and
the beneficiaries of the
facility will gather to
reopen the doors to the
thousands of individuals
who have come to know
the facility as a haven for
African culture and
expression.
“It’s been two long
years,” said Vicki Meek,
the Center’s manager. “
We’ve worked out of other
spaces and we have gained
new audiences. Now I
hope they will join us at
our home.”
Featuring state-of-theart
equipment, an impressive
roster of some of the
giants in the arts, and a
beautiful facility that
includes a new library, a
top of the line dance studio
with full-service dressing
rooms, the
Virtual Sound
Lab recording
& video studio,
digital photography
studio,
the 120-seat
Black Box
Theater, a spectacular
art
gallery with contemporary
lighting and
amazing hardwood floors,
new offices, a break room,
outdoor patio, a beautiful
lobby/reception area and
an extended parking lot.
Art from
local artists
will grace
the walls.
“We
have been
supporting
local artists
for over 20
years,” she
explained, as
she pointed
at photos
from Carl Sidle, during a
recent tour of the facility.
“We do everything that is
culturally based and
African-centered.”
Other artists will be
featured as the center released
a calendar of activities celebrating
the” grand reopening.”
Calling the South
Dallas Cultural Center, “the
premiere center for Jazz” in
the area, Ms. Meek says that
local artists know they have a
venue where their works are
appreciated and she is looking
forward to showcasing all the
local artists.
“We’ve got so much more
space now,” she pointed out
proudly, as she made her way
around each room, explaining
what each would hold, upon
completion. “People can
come here and hold meetings.
It will be so good to have
people come to the Center.”
Dallas City Councilwoman
Carolyn Davis, whose district
includes the center, agrees.
“This looks great,” she
said, after touring the facility.
“This Center is definitely
something to be proud of.”
Long-celebrated for the
caliber of artists and performers
who visit the center and
provide programming for a
community hungry for a
center focusing on their
culture and heritage, the
